Delta Colorado. Have you heard of it? Chances are unless you are from Western Colorado or know someone from Delta, you haven’t. It’s where my mom is from and where she, aunts ,uncles, brother, nephew, sis-in-law, cousins currently call home. I was there visiting and having dinner at my aunts house…liver and onions…yummy yum yum. The liver lovers in my family rejoice every time they hear I am coming. Not because I’m coming, but because they know Aunt Mona will make liver and onions 🙂 🙂
Last time I was there, my Uncle brought up the topic of some mysterious rock formations in the hills around Delta and the prevailing theory is …aliens did it. With a sparkle in his eye he says it must be true because every time he goes to show someone the pictures, he can’t find them on his phone. But when he’s alone they show up. Okay, I think, whatever, this isn’t the first time I’ve heard about aliens in Delta. Just the day before my brother was telling me about strange lights coming at him on his drive home from work. Needless to say, he couldn’t find the pictures this time either, but the liver was done so the pictures were soon forgotten as all mouths were full enjoying the tender, oniony, bacony goodness my aunt had made for us.
The alien topic was continued after the meal, my uncle found his pictures and asked if anyone wanted to go see the formation. Not sure if everyone else had already been there, but when I looked up from the phone they were mumbling words of thanks for dinner and were on their way out the door. So I looked at my mom, eyebrows raised in a question. She said sure, and off we went in search of extraterrestrial proof. You know those parts on divided highways that say “authorized vehicles only”? Yeah, well, we turned on that, zoomed across the southbound lanes and onto a dirt road headed to the hills.
A bumpy 15 minutes later and we were on the top of the hill. It was strange. Aliens? I don’t know. Looked like there were four or five fire-pits mixed in with the straight lines. Campfire? Teenage party place? Human sacrifices? Alien ships scorching the ground at landing and take off? The shape also seems to follow the setting sun, so sun worshipers? Theories abound. As I wondered around the formation I was taking note of how straight the spokes (for want of a better word) were and how the outer circle seemed to curve perfectly. A little to organized for the drunk teenager theory. Corps of engineers team-building project? meh.
After taking pictures and talking and walking for a bit we hopped back in the truck and were bouncing our way out when my Uncle said he hadn’t been able to find the formation on google maps. There is a lot of empty space out in that area and looking for this formation among all the other brown rocks was proving impossible. I opened up google maps and saw our blue arrow bouncing along but didn’t see anything else. Weird right? Here we go again…aliens jamming the phone. But then I zoomed in, and there it was! Now, I’ve tried and tried to embed the image in this post, and just can’t do it. But please go to this link, change to satellite view and zoom in as far as you can. https://www.google.com/maps/@38.7504983,-108.2151543,109m/data=!3m1!1e3
The formation looks like a circle with a seashell in it. All lines radiate out from a central point at the eastern rim of the circle. The “fire-pits” show up too, the biggest one in the center of the main circle and four smaller ones spaced around it like corners of a square. It’s actually pretty cool, and it does make me wonder if a human could have done that from the ground or, if it is indeed used to guide alien ships to the Colorado desert. What do you think?
Could you please be considerate of sacred sites. This is a medicine wheel, the Ute and a couple other tribes use still.
I apologize if I’ve crossed boundaries. No one I had spoken to had any idea what this was for or where it came from.
Taylor, do you have anymore info on this. I have spoken to several people and we can’t find any references with the Ute people.
I knew it!
I can’t believe it’s been there so long and I never heard of it til a couple months ago!
I didn’t go last time so your mom, Aunt Lois and I are going, if we can get Uncle Gary to show us the way. :o)
Let me know what you think.
OK I will. Using that map url you sent I saw it and it does look like a sea shell!
