This mystery by Brianna Labuskes starts out with a bang…a young mother getting arrested for the kidnapping/murder of her daughter. So right away I thought, “well, that’s too easy, she didn’t do it”. And I was ready for the chase.
A few chapters later I was not as captivated and thought this would turn into a stereotypical story about an “upstanding” southern family. You know, where appearances are everything but lurking behind the phony smiles and self importance is a vile darkness of corruption and incest. Nevertheless, I’m one of those people who rarely gives up on a book, seeing it as some kind of failure if I don’t finish what I started. Why I can’t do that in other parts of my life continues to elude me, but that’s a whole other session on the couch. I was in it for the long haul, so I settled down, expecting to be underwhelmed. Boy was I wrong!
It took a few more chapters to get into it, and I was correct with some of my assumptions, but the twists and turns of the story had me hooked. I don’t want to say too much because I want to see if you will be as thrown-for-a-loop as I was when the killer is revealed.
This story shows that you can be stronger than you or anyone else thinks you are, you don’t have to shatter like glass under pressure. It also shows that you never really know what is in the minds and hearts of people around you. Even if they color in the lines at work and in public, inside may just be an angry dark scribble. Well, you know what I mean, and I didn’t think I would, but I do recommend this book. Enjoy!
