Not what I expected, but still impressed. What did I expect? A tall skinny fall dramatically exploding out of a mountain side…you know, typical mountain waterfall. What did I find? A “short” wide waterfall dramatically thundering over the rocks in the middle of a river.
It’s finally road trip season in the upper regions of Idaho, or as my son likes to call it…Canada South. We stayed close to home for the first one, roughly 3 hours round trip and Western Montana never fails to impress.
Kootenai Falls is on highway 2 between Troy and Libby MT. Nice shaded hike through the woods, over the rails (covered bridge), down the stairs and then more hiking through the woods to your final burst through the trees onto the river bank. If you are a gawking toe dragger like me who can trip on air, keep an eye on the trail. There are roots and rocks jutting up everywhere.
There is a little hike between the falls and the bridge…10-15 minutes maybe, wasn’t really paying attention, too busy climbing over/around boulders.
We enjoyed the Libby area and plan to go back and discover what other secrets it holds. Also, interested in how the falls will look when the river isn’t bursting with the spring run off. Good thing about short road trips…if you enjoyed yourself, its an easy trip back!
Nice photos! That is some fish Jamie has!!!! That would be a LOT of meals!!!! lol
