***UPDATED SUMMER PICS AT THE END OF POST
This was a beautiful walk, but I quickly found out it is not maintained in the winter, so if you come during cold weather be prepared. I went a couple days after a snow and it was snow-packed and icy. I went slip sliding down the slight incline from the parking lot to the trail, scaring the crap out of Weezy because she wasn’t sure what the heck I was doing or where I would land! Once we were down the incline it was better, but still uneven and icy, and oh such a very very cold wind! I probably should have turned back and returned when the sun was out and the trail clear, but hey, I was already there, so I went about half way, took some pics and hightailed it back to the warmth of my car.
Despite the cold, there were about a dozen people and dogs sharing the trail that day. This was a great comfort to me, because if my balance-challenged self had an I’ve-fallen-and-can’t-get-up moment, someone would have found me before I became just another frozen lump in the snow.
To get here, you head towards City Beach. As soon as you pass under the City Beach sign hang a left. You’ll be on a little road that goes behind Trinity on the Beach restaurant, Best Western and some condos. Follow it til you come to the end, there is a little dirt parking lot on the right. It doesn’t hold many cars, and there are no-parking signs on the street. If it’s full, back track and park at City Beach, it’s free. Judging by the amount of people out in the cold, I’m guessing in the summer it will be packed, so you may want to save some time and aggravation and just park at City Beach to start.
I will be back once the trail drys to update the post and the pictures. Until then I leave you with a taste of the beauty found on the Pend d’Orielle trail in Sandpoint Idaho.
