What You Did

Full disclosure: took me a while to figure out this was a plate on the cover, looks like a panty shield to me :/

I have mixed feelings regarding this book by Clair McGowan. On the one hand, I enjoyed the story line. On the other hand, I found the characters one-dimensional.

Six college friends get together for the first time in a very long time. What started out as a boozy, lighthearted night rekindling past friendships ends with a violent attack. Ali is the catalyst, she is the one who brought everyone together and hosted the party at her house. Karen is the best friend who cries rape (from her physical appearance obviously something did happen). And Mike, Ali’s husband, is the one accused.

Mike says he didn’t do it, but was so drunk he passed out, blacked out and doesn’t remember. He’s just sure he couldn’t have done something like that. Karen insists it was him, and as the past starts to unfold, Ali’s present begins to unravel and she doesn’t know who to believe.

Ali’s memories of the past start to coincide with her pain of the present. She never knew the whole truth about the past. She only knows what she said and did so she could get the “perfect life” she always dreamed about. As the friends on the periphery are pulled tighter into the events of the present they are also pulled tighter into the memories of the past, putting the perfect life in jeopardy.

Eyes Wide Shut:

When a person refuses to see something in plain view because of preconceived notions of what this something should look like.

I can’t go any further without revealing the twist and I don’t want to ruin it for you. I can say everything is not as it seems. Looking back now, I can see clues dropped along the way like bread crumbs, but I didn’t follow that path! Maybe you will though, enjoy the read!

I’m reading faster than I’m posting, but this was 4/52.
